Halcrow, a CH2M HILL company, was recently named the 2011 International Tunnelling Adviser of the Year, celebrating a night of success at the prestigious New Civil Engineer (NCE) International Tunnelling Awards in Hong Kong on December 1, 2011.

Against stiff competition from leading industry names, Halcrow scooped the coveted International Tunnelling Adviser of the Year award. The award recognised Halcrow's key role on a variety of projects including DART Underground in Dublin, the Northern Line Extension in London, and Brazil's TAV – the first high-speed rail line in Latin America.

The company was also shortlisted for the International Tunnelling Designer of the Year award, in recognition of its design input on key projects around the world.

Halcrow also played an important role in several other projects that were highly praised by the judges—undertaking the design for the Tottenham Court Road London Underground Station upgrade, which was highly commended in the Projects up to £100 Million category. In the same category, Halcrow also provided the tunnels, shafts, and pumping stations design for the Cleaner Sea for Sussex Scheme, which was shortlisted by the judges.

In the Technical Innovation of the Year category, the shortlisted Sacramento County Tunnel Design featured an innovative lining, which was designed by Halcrow.

NCE editor Antony Oliver said, "This year's project winners are all outstanding examples of how technical expertise and innovation can combine to deliver exciting, sustainable, and hugely-valuable infrastructure."

Senior tunnel engineer Martyn Noak/Halcrow commented, "The International Tunnelling Adviser of the Year award, and the recognition for our other projects, is a well-deserved reflection of the great work the tunnels teams have been doing on some of the most notable tunnel projects currently underway around the world.”

The awards ceremony was held at the Conrad Hotel, Hong Kong. Global practice leader for tunnelling and earth engineering/sciences Martin Knights received the award on behalf of Halcrow.

Congratulations to all involved on these significant recognitions!
